Our Technology
Benson Hill’s competitive advantage lies in a comprehensive technology core that includes our proprietary genetics, CropOS® technology platform, and Crop Accelerator rapid prototyping facility. Our sole focus on quality traits in soybeans, combined with AI-powered seed advancements and speed breeding, gives us the capability to dramatically impact end markets.
Leveraging world-leading proprietary germplasm
In pursuit of a rich germplasm base and robust field data to supercharge our predictive breeding efforts, Benson Hill placed a big bet and acquired Schillinger Genetics’ extensive eMERGE® germplasm portfolio in 2019. We hold insights and data points on more than two decades of proprietary, non-GMO soybeans with superior protein content, quality oil, and low anti-nutrient attributes. We’re now pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with those original eMerge genetics through innovation and technology.
The team’s commitment to rapid improvement has already led to the introduction of more than 35 high-performance soybean varieties that are ready to plant today. Dozens more varieties are already in field testing, with plans to commercialize them over the next decade.
The speed at which we’ve already increased yield, boosted protein, and expanded maturity zones for this set of legacy soybeans far surpasses the industry average and is a direct result of our technology and focus.
The Power of AI in Seed Breeding
Because Benson Hill is a leader in AI-driven seed innovation, we can realize step changes that are not only faster, but also credible. Our CropOS® platform, fueled by over 470 billion data points, generates soybean breeding predictions with up to 85% accuracy. This data-powered system lets us optimize the soybean seed development process, ensuring we deliver high-quality seeds that solve specific market challenges with unmatched precision.
Rapid Prototyping with the Crop Accelerator
Benson Hill’s Crop Accelerator, a rapid prototyping facility, takes the plant breeding process to a whole new level. With over 200 completed crop cycles in a highly controlled environment, our team achieves more than four crop ‘seasons’ per year to create the next class of soybean seeds at an unprecedented rate. Since 2021, we have designed and advanced more than 24,000 soybean varieties, generating over 4.4 million digital genotypes. By accelerating biology and incorporating insights along the way, we set the stage for future breakthroughs in soy quality traits.
