As Chief Executive Officer of Natural Selection, Inc. in San Diego, Gary Fogel uses machine learning to solve problems across many industry sectors as well as the nation’s defense. Gary also maintains an Adjunct Faculty role with the Computational Science Research Center at San Diego State University, and he serves on the board of several tech start-ups. His efforts focus mainly on the development of tools for decision-making and diagnostics in a wide variety of settings to convert large-scale ‘omics data into insight. As an IEEE Fellow and previous Editor-in-Chief of BioSystems, Gary has helped bridge multiple communities, including machine learning, systems biology, information theory, and computing. He has over 140 publications and several patents and was named to the Top 100 AI Leaders in Drug Discovery and Advanced Healthcare by Deep Knowledge Analytics in 2019. Gary received his Ph.D. in biology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and his B.A. in biology with a minor in earth science from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
